What is church anyway? Is church a place, an event or is it supposed to be a relationship?
"So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore" is a novel written by Wayne Jacobson and Dave Coleman that is generating great controversy among Christians.
Some feel that the book borders on heresy and should not be read by believers for any reason. They say that the book contradicts God’s Word which calls for believers to worship together as a body.
Others find it just an interesting novel which delves into why Christians go to church, what church truly is, and whether it is the institution God intended for his children. They don’t see the book as a call to leave the church but as a tool for personal evaluation.
Some see the book as encouragement to develop a true and deep relationship with our Father in heaven rather than going through the motions of playing church or placing too great of importance on which church we attend or which programs the church sponsors.
Still others are reading the book and finding relief for their own feelings that church is personally unfulfilling or the source of past wounding, guilt or abuse. They are seeing other options than the traditional church setting for worshipping God with other believers.
Before you make your own decision, read the book! Your intial reaction may be the result of your own past experiences with church as we know it today. I thought the book was excellent and gave voice to a few frustrations I have.
The authors do not recommend we do anything but trust Jesus and be in relationship with others in a personal and meaningful way - and look deeply at why we go to church and do the things we do. Any pastor or other leadership that feels threatened by this book is already in trouble. |
